Research themes
Research at the Department of Earth Sciences operates under three broad themes: Earth and Planetary Dynamics, Earth Surface Systems, Georesources and Geohazards
The research themes cut across institute boundaries. There are numerous collaborations between groups within each research theme and research initiatives that cross theme boundaries. Those collaborations are dynamically driven by specific scientific questions but also occur in the context of experimental, analytical and modelling infrastructure, such as the Rock Physics and Mechanics Laboratory, the geochemical laboratories, the underground laboratory, and the wave propagation laboratory.
Earth and Planetary Dynamics
Research in the Earth and Planetary Dynamics theme pursues an understanding of the physicochemical properties that determine the evolution and current structure of the Earth and other Solar System bodies.
Earth Surface Systems
Research in the Earth Surface Systems theme increasingly focuses on the interactions and feedbacks between different compartments of the surface Earth.
Georesources and Geohazards
Research in the Georesources and Geohazards theme focuses on the fundamental understanding of processes involved in the generation of Georesources, on new methods for the discovery and exploitation, and on the environmental factors leading to geological hazards.
