Alan Green has been full Professor of Engineering and Environmental Geophysics at the Institute of Geophysics, ETH Zurich, since January 1992. He currently directs a multidisciplinary group dedicated to developing and applying high-resolution geophysical techniques for resolving diverse engineering and environmental problems; particular emphasis is placed on ground-penetrating radar and seismic reflection methods.

Born 29 February 1948 in London, England, he completed his studies at British universities. His early research resulted in new techniques for analysing regional and local scale geomagnetic anomalies and for simulating seismic wave propagation through arbitrary heterogeneous media. After a one-year postdoctoral fellowship at the Earth Physics Branch, Ottawa, he became assistant professor of geophysics at the University of Manitoba, Winnipeg. In 1979 he accepted an invitation to become the head of an interdisciplinary geophysical research group at the Geological Survey of Canada, Ottawa. During his 19 years in Canada, he developed new high-resolution seismic techniques for nuclear waste disposal studies and for mineral exploration in crystalline terrains. He also helped initiate and manage the internationally recognized GLIMPCE and LITHOPROBE geoscience programs.

Alan Green has participated in numerous national and international scientific committees and commissions, either as a member or chairman, and has been editor of several international earth science journals. He is currently President of the Inter-Union Commission on the Lithosphere and the International Lithosphere Program. In 1997 he was awarded an honorary doctoral degree from the University of Uppsala in Sweden.
