Domenico Giardini has been full Professor of Seismology and Geodynamics at the ETH Zurich since February 1, 1997. He is also the Director of the Swiss Earthquake Research Center.
Prof. Giardini was born on March 19, 1958 in Bologna, Italy. He studied physics at the University of Bologna, where he received his engineering degree in 1981 and his doctorate in 1987. From 1982 to 1986 he was a member of the scientific staff at the Department of Geological Sciences of Harvard University, from 1987 to 1992 senior researcher at the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica in Rome and since 1992, Associate Professor of Seismology at the University III in Rome. At Harvard he concentrated on the study of deep earthquakes and the interaction between the subducting lithosphere and the convective mantle. He also examined the splitting of natural oscillation of the earth, the structure of the earth's mantle and the anisotropy in the earth's inner core. In Rome, he headed the installation of a digital broad band seismographic network in the Mediterranean and coordinated the inversion of wave modes of seismic broad band data.
Since 1992 he has been director of the Global Seismic Hazard Assessment Program of the UN/International Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction (IDNDR). In the framework of this program, Prof. Giardini coordinates research for INTAS, the EU, UNESCO/IUGS and NATO. He formerly represented Italy and now represents Switzerland in international seismological commissions.
