Hansruedi Maurer teaches in the Department of Earth Sciences and leads several multidisciplinary research programmes in the Applied and Environmental Geophysics Group of the Institute of Geophysics. He was awarded the title of Professor in 2007.



He was born in 1961 in Zurich. After receiving his Diploma in geophysics he completed a doctoral project in 1993 on the microseismicity and seismotectonics of the western Swiss Alps. Both degrees were conferred by ETH. Subsequently, he joined the newly formed group of Applied and Environmental Geophysics. Based on his contributions to geophysical tomography he was awarded the Habilitation degree in 2002. In 1996 and 2005 he was a visiting scientist at the Geological Survey of Canada in Ottawa and the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, respectively.



Hansruedi Maurer's current research interests are related to tomographic inversions of diverse geophysical data sets and statistical experimental design. For his pioneering work on statistical experimental design he received the 1998 Best Poster Award of the Society of Exploration Geophysics and the 2004 Best Paper Award in Geophysics. He is a member of the Swiss Geophysical Commission and Associate Editor of the journal Geophysics.
